What is SpaceOAR?
According to Augmenix, the manufacturer of SpaceOAR, the gel is predominantly made of water. SpaceOAR is biocompatible, which means it is safe for use in the body.
Applied under anesthesia, the gel is placed between the rectum and prostate, pushing the rectum out of range of the highest doses of radiation. This additional space decreases radiation exposure to the rectum, resulting in as much as a 24% reduction in side effects as compared with the alternative balloon method.
SpaceOAR lasts for 6 months, after which time it is absorbed into the body and excreted naturally through the urine.
