Skin Cancer Prevention

Skin Cancer Prevention

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the US. Excessive exposure to UV radiation from the sun can damage the cells within skin tissue. Fortunately, skin cancer is also the most preventable type of cancer. These skin cancer prevention tips can help you avoid many common causes of skin cancer.

Skin Cancer Prevention Tips

Summer is the season most commonly associated with sunburns and exposure to the sun. In fact, UV rays are present year-round. Practicing skin cancer prevention throughout the year will help you keep your skin healthy for years to come.

Top Tips for Skin Cancer Prevention

Do:

  • Wear sunscreen if you plan to be in the sun for a prolonged amount of time
  • Reapply sunscreen throughout the day, especially if you are active or will be in the water
  • Apply sunscreen to young children, and reapply every 2 hours
  • Wear long-sleeved clothing and a wide-brimmed hat if you plan to be in the sun for a prolonged amount of time
  • Use sunscreen with a SPF rating of at least 15 – 30
  • Wear sunglasses
  • Speak with your doctor about any medications you may be taking; some types of medications can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight

Don’t:

  • Be in the sun between 10am – 4pm, when the sun is at its most intense; seek shaded areas or plan to be indoors instead
  • Intentionally tan either outdoors or at a tanning salon

You may be surprised to learn that water, ice, and snow can increase your chances of developing a sunburn, as these surfaces reflect sun rays. You can take steps towards skin cancer prevention by practicing sun safety throughout the year.

Check your skin for the early signs of skin cancer by self-screening, and visit your doctor at least once a year for a professional screening. Learn more about skin cancer screening.
