Radiation Therapy for Gynecologic Cancer

Radiation Therapy for Gynecologic Cancer

Radiation therapy for gynecologic cancer is a safe and effective treatment option for many individuals. At Blue Ridge Radiation Oncology, we use a form of internal radiation therapy known as High Dose Rate Brachytherapy (HDR) to treat gynecologic cancers and malignancies. All types of radiation therapy damage the DNA of cancerous cells, preventing them from reproducing and spreading.

During HDR brachytherapy, a small, high-dose source of radiation is placed either into or directly next to a cancerous tumor for a short amount of time. This method delivers a high dose of radiation directly to a tumor while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

High Dose Rate Brachytherapy is performed as an outpatient procedure, so you can resume normal activities soon after treatment. This procedure is generally repeated over the course of a few days or a few weeks as determined by your doctor.

Every patient is unique, and our doctors tailor a treatment plan best suited to your needs and health. We are always happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have. Our team of highly trained experts is committed to providing quality care in a comfortable and compassionate atmosphere.
